Job Description

We’re looking for a creative, forward-thinking editorial leader to shape our newsletter strategy and oversee this vitally important digital platform for the magazine. Currently, we have thirteen newsletters that go out to an audience of more than a million readers every day. This person will develop and execute a vision for how to translate The New Yorker‘s editorial approach into newsletters. He or she will launch new products, run tests, work on expanding the reach of our program, and coordinate with teams across Condé Nast on ways to use newsletters as an editorial tool and a digital channel to drive audience growth, subscriber acquisition, engagement, and retention. The ideal candidate is someone passionate about The New Yorker, who has thought deeply about the future of digital media, and who is comfortable working at the intersection of editorial content, audience development, product management, and consumer marketing.


  • Lead The New Yorker’s editorial newsletter strategy—you’ll be building the long-term vision for one of our most important distribution channels.
  • Identify opportunities for growth, including new newsletters, adjustments to the content strategy of existing newsletters, improvements to e-mail design, and strategies for subscriber acquisition.

  • Work with editors to determine newsletter lineups.

  • Propose and run tests to optimize our existing suite of products.

  • Handle reporting and analysis of newsletter performance.

  • Collaborate with key Condé Nast stakeholders on strategies to drive both consumer revenue and sales growth.

  • Edit contributions for newsletters from New Yorker writers, generate ideas for editorial content, and build newsletters.

  • Build systems to more efficiently create newsletters.


  • Strong editorial judgment, and a knowledge of—and passion for—The New Yorker.

  • Experience creating, launching, and testing new products.

  • Knowledge of analytics tools such as Google Analytics,, or Chartbeat, and the ability to analyze data from those sources.

  • Capable of handling multiple projects at once—you’ll be leading a small team that takes on a lot for The New Yorker.

  • Prior experience leading teams on newsletter or social strategy.

  • Comfortable learning new editorial systems and managing technical challenges.

  • Strong interpersonal skills and ability to manage relationships across the magazine and throughout the company.

  • Experience editing or writing for digital media outlets.
